The last few years have seen Nick Cave engage with fans more directly and openly than ever before. “You can ask me anything,” was the simple and direct message he posted to fans on the launch of his Red Hand Files website. Over the past 12 months, Cave answered questions from fans on everything from the banal to the grandiose. Last week, he used to site to casually announce that a new Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds record was on the way. It appeared online at 10pm last night and fans all over the world were invited to listen to the band’s 17th studio album, ‘Ghosteen’, together. This newly open and collective approach to communication also dominated Cave’s shows over the last year; they effectively became the live version of the Red Hand Files. Part concert, part cathartic confessional, they saw Cave take unvetted questions and reply with often searing honesty – a far cry from the past when, as an interviewee, the typically enigmatic star gave little away. It seems this change in approach emerged via the most tragic circumstances imaginable: the sudden, accidental death of his 15-year-old son Arthur in 2015. Cave said the tragedy transformed him as an individual, making him see humanity anew. It gave him, he explained, “a deep feeling toward other people and an absolute understanding of that suffering.” While many interpreted Cave’s last album, ‘Skeleton Tree’ as his exploration of the suffering he and those closest to him experienced following the tragedy, he later revealed that the majority of the songs were written prior to Arthur’s death. Yet the bleakness and cracks in Cave’s voice – there’s a comparison to be made to Johnny Cash’s ‘Hurt’ era – left little to the imagination as to just how much the loss had shaped its delivery, grief always feeling palpable. If ‘Skeleton Tree’ gave a glimpse into grief in its immediate aftermath, ‘Ghosteen’ is a grief considered. Like Lewis’ A Grief Observed, the album evokes the trying-to-make-sense stage of grief, even when there’s often no sense to be found. ‘Part 1’ of this record, Cave has said is “the children”; ‘Part 2’ is “the adults”. Ghosteen itself is “a migrating spirit”. This is one of the most outwardly beautiful albums in the Bad Seeds collection, and also one of the most singularly devastating. From the offset, these songs have little in the way of rhythm or structure, as Cave seeks to mirror the disorientation that grief brings. It is a filmic and vivid fever dream. Thomas Wydler’s percussion is largely absent, replaced instead by Warren Ellis’ electronic dreamscapes, which bring much ambient lightness and air, as Cave imagines a Heaven-like place in which the afterlife exists – a place distant to a dying world where “everyone is hidden, everyone is cruel / There’s no shortage of tyrants, no shortage of fools.” The afterlife he imagines, fashioned from a fantastical world of fairy tales, gods and mythical creatures, is painfully far away for Cave: “Everything is distant as the stars / And I am here and you are where you are,” his voice cracks. The immersive atmosphere the album creates frequently crushes: where grief was perhaps more distant on ‘Skeleton Tree’, here it’s painfully magnified. We’re not so much observing grief from afar as being invited to starkly experience it side-by-side with someone experiencing the most painful hours of their lives. It’s often an overwhelming experience. Music on ‘Ghosteen’ is sparse and spectral: choirs wail and echoes of violins frequently haunt against singular piano keys. Cave’s voice darts between the fragile and the ferocious, between wild rage and abject helplessness. His mournful lines recall William Blake as much as Leonard Cohen or Scott Walker: “It isn’t any fun to be standing here alone with nowhere to be / With a man mad with grief and on each side a thief / and everybody hanging from a tree”. Likewise, when Cave sees his migrating spirit, his ‘Ghosteen’, his lines are thoroughly disarming: “And the little white shade dancing at the end of the hall / Just a wish that time can’t dissolve.” In an open letter to a fan on Red Hand Files earlier this year, Cave spoke about the comfort he found in imagining an afterlife as a means to cope with grief. “Within that whirling gyre all manner of madnesses exist; ghosts and spirits and dream visitations, and everything else that we, in our anguish, will into existence,” he wrote, continuing: “These are precious gifts that are as valid and as real as we need them to be. They are the spirit guides that lead us out of the darkness.” These “spirit guides” are everywhere on ‘Ghosteen’, an album on which imaginations and realities blur. They take the form of a fairy tale Elvis and Pricilla on ‘Spinning Song’; a mythical creature on album standout ‘Leviathan’; and a group of children who collectively create a spiral to Heaven on ‘Sun Forest.’ Part 2 of the album sees these spirit guides lead us out of the darkness with lengthier compositions, but not before the protagonist must thrash around through sleepless nights, nightmares and daydreams of escape. As he puts it: “I’m waiting for peace to come”. All of this happens against a backdrop of a harrowing apocalypse where horses scream, Jesus wails and bodies hang from trees. At times, the observations are so personal that to listen feels intrusive. “Peace will come,” Cave assures us, although it never really does. ‘Ghosteen’ is one of the most devastatingly accurate accounts of grief that you’ll ever listen to. Yet it’s also, astoundingly, one of the most comforting. Few mediations on grief manage to navigate despair and catharsis as well as this. Cave encourages us to candidly speak about grief, be it through wild imaginings, eerie hauntings or gentle longings. Only then, as he points out, can we find some sort of “peace of mind.” Whatever form grief takes, Cave encourages us to find beauty in pain, even when it might be difficult to do so. These are probably the most painful songs Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds have ever recorded, but they’re also the most beautiful: it is a work of extraordinary, unsettling scope.

Cave has split the album up into two separate parts. The first eight being “The Children” and the last two being “The Parents”. You can read so much of what went into this as a response to the death of Cave’s son in 2015, but as with all great art, the person taking it all in can form a hypothesis of their own.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ 18th album was casually announced, a week before its release, in answer to an online query from a fan on Cave’s Red Hand Files website. That says a lot about how Nick Cave has transformed himself over the last 12 months. Previously an entertaining but guarded interviewee, he has, more or less, thrown himself open to the public. His website began with Cave posting the words “You can ask me anything” online. He’s subsequently answered dozens of fans’ questions, from the trivial to the metaphysical, eloquently and at most recent tour was effectively its live incarnation, based around an audience Q&A, conducted without a moderator. Anyone who has attended an artist Q&A where a particularly banzai fan has ended up in possession of the microphone knows what a bold high-wire act that is. The accidental death of his son Arthur in 2015, he said, has led him to “see people in a different way”, giving him “a deep feeling toward other people and an absolute understanding of their suffering”.And yet, for all his new-found empathy and openness, some things about Nick Cave remain enigmatic. What, for example, are we supposed to make of Ghosteen’s cover, a kitschy, fairytale landscape illustration that looks not unlike one of those leaflets Jehovah’s Witnesses hand out at shopping centres? His description of the album is also pretty gnomic: the eight songs on the first album are “the children”; the two lengthy tracks and spoken word piece on album two are “their parents”.Anyone seeking a more prosaic description of Ghosteen’s contents might note that, sonically, it continues and extends the weightless, drifting style of its two predecessors. It’s not entirely clear how Bad Seeds drummer Thomas Wydler passed his time in the studio, given that this time around, there are virtually no rhythms – with the more punishing of Warren Ellis’s tape loops and electronics replaced by warm analogue synthesiser that gives proceedings a faintly proggy feel. Indeed, Ghosteen occasionally feels like an infinitely warmer, sweeter sibling of 2016’s Skeleton Tree. While that album forced its most beautiful melodies to pick their way gingerly through minefields of explosive noise and eerie, discordant soundscapes - or to submit to Cave singing them in an alarmingly parched, numb voice – here they’re bolstered by soft, pillowy harmonies and stately piano. Cave’s voice, meanwhile, sounds rich. At an age when singers tend to start losing some of their range, his appears to be getting wider: it’s hard to imagine the twentysomething who snarled and howled his way through Saint Huck or Your Funeral My Trial daring to attain the high notes he achieves on The Spinning for Ghosteen by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Photograph: Ghosteen LtdThe result is perhaps the most straightforwardly beautiful set of songs that Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have ever recorded, which fits with the album’s lyrical themes. When you listen to Ghosteen, the “children”/ “parents” description makes sense. Cave has talked about how his son’s death altered his work, how he found a way to “write beyond the trauma … to propel [myself] beyond the personal into a state of wonder”. And, despite the appearance of regular Cave themes – the first thing you hear is him invoking Vegas-era Elvis – Ghosteen appears to depict that process. For all the cinematic attractiveness of their arrangements and the title track’s opening meditation on the beauty of the world, the long songs on album two seem darker in tone, filled with sleepless nights, departures and desperate fantasies of escape: “I’m waiting for peace to come,” repeats one ambiguous line in Hollywood. The songs on album one, meanwhile, sound like the result of working through those emotions: lighter, calmer, concerned with empathy and faith. You feel the shift most clearly on Sun Forest, in which Cave does his patented apocalyptic thing – screaming horses, burning trees, hanging bodies, Jesus mad with grief – before the lyric suddenly flips – “the past pulls away and the future begins and I say goodbye to all that, / and the future rolls in like a wave… and the past, with its savage undertow, lets go” – and ends up exhorting the listener: “Come on, everyone!”Most listeners seemed to take Skeleton Tree as an extended treatise on grief, ignoring Cave’s insistence that the songs predated the loss they were presumed to be about. In fairness, you could see why, given how bleak and disturbing it sounded. But if Ghosteen is the album people supposed its predecessor to be, it sounds like nothing like you might expect of an album informed by one level, it shouldn’t be surprising that it’s as good as it is: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have been in a career-high purple patch since the last double album they released, 2004’s Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus. Nevertheless, listening to Ghosteen, it’s very hard indeed not to be taken aback.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have returned with their 17th album, Ghosteen, on Oct. 4. Just in time for Halloween! Cave is currently working on the follow-up to the Bad Seeds’ 2019 LP Ghosteen. The Australian singer previously released the collaborative album Carnage alongside countryman Warren Ellis in February 2021, with the duo embarking on a UK tour in support of the album later that year.

What is the worst that can happen? And what happens after the worst does? Nick Cave, leader of the Bad Seeds, his band of over 30 years, has had to endure the triple bind of unimaginable tragedy, processing grief as a public figure and – more recently – the task of metabolising that suffering into some kind of continued artistic existence. Had Cave gone to ground indefinitely after the death of his teenage son Arthur in 2015, everyone would have he released an album in 2016, Skeleton Tree – a work digested by fans in the shadow of the event, but largely written before it – and an accompanying documentary, the visually lyrical One More Time With Feeling, which dealt with the aftermath of Arthur’s year, Cave did two more barely imaginable things: he started an ask-me-anything online forum called the Red Hand Files where he candidly discussed his own state of mind and handed out sage advice like the most sublime of agony uncles. Then Cave took the whole process on tour, embarking on an extraordinary series of solo dates in which he mixed song with questions from the audience. That this formerly forbidding bard of lust and brimstone, violence and tenderness, was trading in his artistic aloofness for a purgative communion marked one of the most remarkable evolutions in rock. “Nothing can go wrong, because everything has gone wrong,” he noted in there is Ghosteen, a double album about a wandering spirit in which Cave invokes the gravitas of the late Leonard Cohen and the hoarse, harsh beauty of latterday Scott Walker. You might have thought bereavement might have unleashed a raging, vengeful beast within Cave – there is a cougar on this album, prowling the perimeter of a California compound, “with a terrible engine of wrath for a heart”, but it is the sole irruption here of the old, Old Testament to these 11 songs requires a ready supply of absorbent materials, some rehydration salts – it is so very sad – and perhaps a metaphysician on call. Quite apart from the devastation in its recurrent themes – Jesus in his mother’s arms, blackened butterflies, stairways to heaven, a malevolent, Pied Piper-like sun that steals children away – Ghosteen is an album about the very nature of what is real and what is not, and who is to Horses, one of the most beautiful songs here, sets loose metaphorical horses of love with “manes full of fire” into an apocalyptic landscape. But then Cave reins them back in.“And we’re all so sick and tired of seeing things as they are,” he aches, “The horses are just horses and their manes aren’t full of fire, and the fields are just fields and there ain’t no Lord.”Watch an album trailer for though, feels the continued presence of his son, “a little white shape dancing at the end of the world”. Cave assures us he’s coming home “on the train”. Why not believe in ghosts? “There’s nothing wrong with loving something you can’t hold in your hand,” Cave muses, on the title track. And Arthur’s analogue, the Ghosteen, appears from time to time, to say: “I am beside you.”As to where we go when we die, this career-long purveyor of religious imagery doesn’t tackle that directly. “We are here, and you are where you are,” he puts it movingly, on a song called Fireflies, the first sign of this new album, its lyrics released via the Red Hand Files a year album’s vivid cover art, meanwhile, is a kitsch paradise by the artist Tom du Bois in which flamingos frolic and lions lie down with lambs, signalling a radical change of emotional landscape for the Bad Seeds. And yet Ghosteen completes a trilogy of records connected by their sound: Push the Sky Away (2013), Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen are all keening, subliminally orchestral works, swirling with electronic mood music; they supersede the rock format and solo piano of previous Bad Seeds or Cave solo works, underscoring the cornerstone presence of violinist Warren Ellis, who also provides revelatory backing takes a moment to decipher Cave’s explanation that the songs on Part One are the children, and the songs on Part Two are their parents. These are not two sets of songs sung from generational points of view, but rather, Ghosteen’s second half contains the seeds of its first: the songs of Part One may have been spun off from Part Two. Subtle evolutions in mood and instrumentation come to peaks that are made all the more stunning by their scarcity. There are pianos, but the exhausted trope of the sad piano ballad is nowhere to be found. A luminous, Kraftwerk-like sheen distinguishes the title track itself; on Night Raid, a bell of sorts tolls. At its very climax, the catastrophic moment where a small child abandons his bucket and spade and “climbs into the sun”, the final track collapses in on itself, a pulsating, flickering black hole of electronic absence that is more astonishing than any cheap pile-on of is still Cave, though. This rollercoaster ride comes bookended by two fables. Spinning Song takes an Elvis-like character and plants a tree in his garden: the launch of a suite of songs with all the force of myth, in which a flotilla of galleons sails into the predawn air and sea creatures are sprung from the deep. In among all this hallucinatory elegance sit everyday vignettes: listening to the radio in the kitchen, sitting in a car the end, Cave reprises the Buddhist tale of Kisa Gotami, a heartbroken mother combing each house in a village for a mustard seed with which to save her child, the Buddha’s proviso being that the seeds had to come from houses where there had not been a can’t find a single one. No one is untouched by loss. And this album finds Cave comforted by the universality of suffering, and the succour of those who gathered around him. “For we are not alone it seems, so many riders in the sky,” Cave observes on Galleon Ship. On Ghosteen Speaks, the spirit notes: “I think my friends have gathered here for me.”
