Z moves don't work well in competetive as it, much like D/Gmax, adds a sense of randomness to the game that Megas don't. In gen 6, if I saw a pokemon that could mega, I would assume that it will on its first turn and prepare accordingly but with Z moves and D/Gmax any pokemon can do it at any time.
