Those who are familiar with “Kiss from a Rose” know that the lyrics are highly-symbolic and not the easiest to decipher. As such, widely-accepted interpretations of this song vary and are for the most part unrelated. This is partially because the writer and songwriter himself, Seal, has refused to state outright the inspiration behind this song. Instead of explaining the true meaning of the lyrics, he has constantly ambiguously stated that it is based on “some kind of relationship”. In fact for years he forsook “Kiss from a Rose” altogether. This may be due the fact that he wrote it during the pre-fame era of his life, when he was living in London under apparently economically-challenging conditions. As such, he encourages listeners to derive their own meaning from the track. In other words, he believes that what the listener perceives through the lyrics is more-important than what he was actually referring to when he wrote them. What do we think about this song? Judging from the profoundness of the song’s lyrics, we have no doubts that the song was indeed inspired by a relationship Seal was in. Whoever he was in this relationship with must have meant so much to him at the time he wrote this song. Why do we say so? The sheer depth and overpowering nature of the lyrics show how special this person was to him.
